CREATIVE ROAD TRIP GAMES FOR KIDS

“I’m bored, are we there yet?”

Beat the boredom these school holidays with some creative road trip games for kids courtesy of Tyrepower:

1. I’m going on a picnic. This alphabet-based game is for two or more players. The first player begins by saying, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing…” followed by something that begins with A, such as ‘apricot’. The second player repeats what the first person said, and also adds something begins with B. Therefore he or she might say, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apricots and blueberries.” And it continues through the rest of the alphabet. If somebody forgets an item, they are out. The last player who can recite all of the items on the list wins the game.

2. 20 questions. The first player thinks of a place, person or thing. The other players take it in turns to ask questions about it and guess what it is from the responses (only ‘yes’ and ‘no’ are allowed as answers). The game continues until a player guesses correctly – and then it’s their turn to think of the next item.

3. The Preacher’s Cat. Another alphabet-based memory game for school-aged kids. To play, each player constructs the same sentence around a letter of the alphabet. Starting with A, the first play may say something like “The preacher’s cat is an adventurous cat named Alfred.” The second player replaces the two words beginning with A with others starting with the same letter, for example, “The preacher’s cat is an adorable cat named Ally.” If a player can’t think of a new word, or repeats a word, they are out. The game continues on with the remaining letters of the alphabet until there is one remaining player.

4. Guess the song. The first player hums a song and the other players try to guess the song. The player who guesses the song correctly can hum the next song.

5. Secret place race. You will need a road map and two people. The first player finds a small town, river, mountain or street and states the name of the place they have chosen. The second player has 60 seconds to look at the map and try to find that hidden place.

6. Word Tennis. The youngest player starts by saying a word. The next player has to say a word that relates to that or is the opposite of it. You keep playing until a player can’t think of anything else or repeats a word that has already been said. For example, the first player might say “mouse” and player two could say “small”, the next player could respond with “big” and so on.
